UGA Bamboo Farm

Children’s Garden

The secret garden

This design was a project for the UGA experimental bamboo farm. I was assigned the children’s garden and I took inspiration from my own childhood fascination with “the secret garden.” I designed garden gateways to inspire wonder and entice visitors into the children’s garden. Laurel shrubs and evergreen, fragrant vines would be trained to grow on metal frames supporting whimsical windows and doors in which butterflies would spill out from the extensive butterfly gardens planted inside the garden interior. The garden facilitates a series of garden rooms; a butterfly conservatory, a sitting room, a jungle gym designed to look like bamboo (as if it is emerging from the bamboo forest itself), corn silos offer sweeping garden views, and a wishing well complete the experience.

My role involved:

  • Client meetings with the bamboo farm

  • Landscape and hardscape design

  • Drafting and graphics

  • Presentations

*All work was completed while an undergradaute student at the University of Georgia, 2010
